MSP KPI Definition

MSP Technology Standards Compliance: Definition & Formula

Technology standards compliance is the share of assessed, applicable checks that meet a defined standard. Illustrative example: 72 compliant checks out of 80 assessed applicable checks give 90%. Unassessed checks must be disclosed separately; excluding them does not establish that they comply. A simple count also does not weight the business risk of each exception.

Target interpretation

Context matters

Set the target against your service scope and company plan.

Formula

Standards compliance % = assessed applicable checks meeting the standard ÷ assessed applicable checks × 100

Why it matters

Documented gaps create an evidence base for client roadmap decisions.

Risk context prevents a high percentage from hiding one consequential exception.

Common mistakes

Counting unassessed checks as compliant.

Changing applicability to improve the score without evidence.

Treating every failed check as having equal impact or requiring an immediate project.

What moves the number

Maintain versioned standards and evidence for each check.

Show assessment coverage and exceptions beside the percentage.

Connect prioritized gaps to client decisions, owners and follow-through.
