MSP KPI Definition

MSP NRR to MRR Ratio: Definition, Formula, and 25% Operating Standard

Here NRR means nonrecurring revenue, not net revenue retention. NRR to MRR compares nonrecurring project-labor revenue with managed-services revenue for the same period. For a monthly example, $25,000 project-labor revenue ÷ $100,000 MRR = 25%. For a quarter, divide quarter-total project labor by quarter-total managed-services revenue, not by one month of MRR. It helps leadership see whether Technical Alignment, business alignment, Design Desk, and Professional Services are consistently turning identified needs into approved and delivered work.

Common mistakes

Including one-time product sales in project-labor NRR.

Celebrating one large project month without looking at the longer trend.

Blaming Professional Services when the real gap is opportunity identification or proposal flow.

Growing project revenue without checking billable utilization and gross margin.

What moves the number

Strengthen Technical Alignment and business-alignment opportunity identification.

Review opportunity management every week.

Keep Design Desk proposal flow moving.

Maintain professional-services backlog and billable utilization together.

Track the ratio over quarters, not only a single month.
