MSP KPI Definition
MSP Net Profit Margin: Definition, Formula & Operating Standard
In the 30-40-30 calculator, modeled profit is total revenue minus the delivery COGS and SG&A entered by the user; divide by the same period’s revenue for the margin. For example, ($100,000 − $30,000 − $40,000) ÷ $100,000 = 30%. This model does not separately calculate taxes, interest, depreciation, amortization or owner-compensation adjustments. Confirm those accounting treatments before comparing it with a financial statement. MSP Fuel uses a 30% target as the profit component of the 30-40-30 managed-services model.

MSP Fuel Operating Standard
30%
MSP Fuel taught operating standard in the 30-40-30 managed-services model.
Taught operating target, not an observed industry benchmark.
Formula
Net Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Revenue
Why it matters
Profit creates the financial capacity to invest in people, systems, growth, and owner optionality.
Revenue growth without sufficient margin can increase complexity faster than enterprise value.
Profitability directly affects EBITDA and therefore the enterprise-value model used in the Growth Planning Tool.
It forces leadership to connect operational efficiency and sales growth rather than treating them as separate goals.
Common mistakes
Managing revenue growth without a profitability target.
Comparing companies without normalizing owner compensation or unusual expenses.
Assuming a high gross margin automatically guarantees a high net margin.
Using one unusually strong month as evidence of a durable operating margin.
What moves the number
Start with gross margin by revenue stream before cutting SG&A blindly.
Normalize owner compensation when using profit for planning comparisons.
Use monthly financial review cadence and trend the result over time.
Connect department initiatives to the financial number they are expected to move.
