MSP FTA-to-Close Rate: Definition, Formula, and 20% Operating Standard
FTA-to-close rate measures how effectively qualified first sales conversations ultimately become new clients. FTA is the internal label for the initial assessment; STA identifies a subsequent leadership assessment when warranted. Count qualified FTAs actually attended, not appointments booked, no-shows or second sessions. Associate wins with the same group of initial assessments; do not divide this month’s wins by unrelated meetings from this month. Record the observation cutoff because open opportunities can still change the rate. Prospect-facing meeting names vary; this metric tracks qualified initial conversations through to new clients, not a mandatory meeting sequence.

MSP Fuel Operating Standard
≥ 20%
MSP Fuel taught operating standard for qualified initial assessments converting to new-logo clients.
Taught operating target, not an observed industry benchmark.
Formula
FTA-to-Close Rate = New Logos Closed ÷ Qualified FTAs Attended
Why it matters
It connects top-of-funnel volume to the number of actual wins required by the growth plan.
It makes close-rate improvement economically visible because better conversion reduces the appointment volume required to hit the same sales target.
It can expose qualification, discovery, diagnosis, follow-up, or decision-process gaps.
It belongs beside no-show and not-a-fit rates so the sales team understands the whole appointment funnel.
Common mistakes
Using too small a sample and treating a referral-heavy month as a durable close rate.
Including clearly unqualified meetings in the denominator without tracking not-a-fit rate separately.
Focusing only on the final close instead of FTA-to-STA and STA-to-close conversion.
Improving close rate by accepting bad-fit clients.
What moves the number
Tighten qualification before the FTA.
Use a consistent diagnostic FTA process and score call quality.
When the diagnosis warrants a leadership conversation, involve the seats responsible for the result.
Track no-show and not-a-fit rates separately.
Review won and lost calls monthly to find where the buyer actually decided.
